Located in Philadelphia, Independence Media has transformed a traditional non-commercial television operation into a new multi-platform media company. The new operation includes analog and television broadcast/cablecast on the current WYBE Channel 35 (NTSC) / Channel 34 (DT), 24/7 IPTV (video streaming), and an internet VOD system. The local broadcast signal reaches 6 million viewers in 12 counties (17 counties in 2009); the internet operation provides global service. Our first new brand is MiND: Media Independence, a TV + internet operation built from 5-minute programs (many viewer-generated), and based upon an IT infrastructure more closely aligned with newer internet distribution technologies than with traditional television operations.

We are seeking a unique individual whose primary expertise is IT systems and infrastructure, and whose secondary expertise is television and video. This new hire will manage, control, administer, and develop Independence Media’s technology, and play a key role in developing and implementing the organization’s future.

This is a hands-on position with significant responsibility, considerable freedom, a lot of hands-on work, and forward-thinking opportunities.

Specific IT and TV/Video Responsibilities include:
• Servers & Network: management maintenance periodic upgrades, optimization of increasingly integrated system of office, production, and distribution servers and related network.
• Digital Transition: close coordination with vendor of transition to DTV by February 09; planning and implementation of upgrades to air chain for 4 digital channels (35.1, 35.2, 35.3, 35.4)
• Transmission: Management of existing air chain, including a current mix of analog and digital, and an ultimate all-digital goal
• Distribution: development, implementation, management of installation, maintenance of distribution of MiND in markets outside the Philadelphia.
  
  

Preferred Experience
• Minimum five (5) years in IT, IPTV, or digital media
• Experience with Macintosh Server 10.4/10.5 is necessary. Experience with Xsan software is a plus
• Experience with Macintosh and Microsoft Open and Active directories
• Deep and wide understanding of internet, IT, network systems, servers, and their application
• Planning of integrated systems; hands-on implementation including research, systems planning, purchasing, installation, trouble-shooting, maintenance and upgrades; further integration with new or changing technologies
• Past role in start-ups, or similarly complex / dynamic organizations
• B.A. or B.S. required, advanced coursework desired
